Abstract

Matière et Memóire is, in the words of the great mentor and founder of the Portuguese Renaissance, “one of the most opulent, rich and penetrating books that philosophical thought has produced” (COIMBRA, 1994, p. 89) - and it is so on several levels. Here we will try to bring to light one of the most luminous innovations that were introduced by Bergson in the history of human thought, not only in its purely philosophical aspect, but also in its scientific importance. By investigating the nature of the exosmotic relationship between memory and body, we will try to demonstrate how Bergson conceives the melodic unity of these two planes, showing that existence is always fundamentally focused on action.
