The explanatory role of the forces of production within the materialist conception of history

This article addresses the persistent question about the role of productive forces in explaining the dynamics of history within the materialist conception of history. According to the interpretations of the aforementioned theoretical conception that came to be characterized as technological-deterministic, the essential explanatory foundation of the historical process would consist in the development of productive forces. The main purposes of this article are to highlight the incompatibility of these interpretations with the theory elaborated by Marx and to demonstrate how it is possible to preserve the explanatory importance of the forces of production within the materialist conception of history without disregarding other relevant determinations for the dynamics of history.
