Abstract

This essay discusses the concept of postmodernity based on the hypothesis of a crisis of narration, as interpreted by philosopher Byung-Chul Han (2023). The conceptual issues raised are then applied to the field of the arts—considered here through the framework of the epistemology of Critical Poiesis, a new line of research in the arts also presented in this essay—with examples from contemporary music and visual arts, particularly within the realm of contemporary auteur cinema. Three films are taken as paradigmatic for understanding the issues addressed and are ultimately analyzed with the aim of applying the concepts discussed in the essay. These films are Poor Things (2023), directed by Yorgos Lanthimos; Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert; and Megalopolis (2024), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Through this analysis, the study seeks to expand the understanding of the problems of narration in late modernity and their effects on artistic productions.
