Education in Movement for the Right to Overcome Inequality in Access to Education

Abstract

This paper discusses the challenges of educating young people in traditional communities in the Tefé National Forest (Flona) and its surroundings, especially with regard to access to and quality of education. The methodology used was participatory action research. We worked with two focus groups with seven people in each, totaling 14 young people, and used 38 semi-structured questionnaires. The method of analysis was dialectical materialism, regarding the relationships established between groups of people and their connections with the processes of social transformation and their outlines. We sought to highlight the contradictions surrounding this education, and how young people move on with regard to the issue. Listening to the needs of the forest people, we realized that we need to overcome two issues that we discussed and pointed out in this text: the first is banking education, which does not respect the culture and context of the person being educated and only deposits knowledge; the second is the lack of public policies for access to quality public education that takes into account the specificities of traditional peoples and communities.
